COVID-19 Protocols

Updated March, 2022

We offer these protocols in the spirit of valuing all life as sacred. We hope these guidelines can keep us all safe and well as we come together to practice and overcome this time of collective challenge together.

Vaccination & Booster Mandate

We require all visitors and retreatants to be fully vaccinated and boosted, and to show proof upon arrival.

Prior to Arrival at Dhamma Dena

Upon arrival, we require proof of a negative PCR COVID-19 test, administered within the past 72 hrs. Between your test and arrival at Dhamma Dena, please practice great care to remain uninfected, such as wearing an N95 mask outside your home and practicing 6-foot distancing. Please do not use a cloth mask.

Please also purchase an at-home rapid COVID-19 test and bring it with you. (If you cannot afford a test kit, please let us know so that we can reimburse you.) Upon arrival at Dhamma Dena, please test yourself to confirm that you do not have COVID-19.

If you are sick or experiencing the symptoms of a COVID infection, please wait until your symptoms fully resolve before coming to Dhamma Dena. We are happy to reschedule your stay after you are fully recovered.

Precautions While Traveling to Dhamma Dena

For the safety of the community, we ask that retreatants keep their mask on in all indoor, public situations, while traveling to the center. If you are traveling by plane, please keep your mask on during the flight, including refraining from eating. To drink water on the flight, use a straw under your mask.

When Indoors at Dhamma Dena During a Residential Retreat

Retreatants are additionally asked to wear an N95 mask when inside any of the common areas. Those who wish to eat inside are invited to practice 6-foot distancing. Wearing a mask inside your bedroom is optional.

  • Common areas include the Zendo, the Main House (kitchen & dining room), Samadhi House, Metta House and Library.

  • Common areas will also be ventilated by cracking a window or door and having a functioning air purifier.

Visitors, Self- and Work-Retreatants, and Long-term Residents

Outside of residential retreats, with a smaller number of people residing at the center, we relax the indoor mask policy. We may share a living space, and be together indoors without a mask or distancing.

While on Errands Outside of Dhamma Dena

  • Wear a N95 mask in all indoor situations.

  • Wear a N95 mask when outdoors around people (ex: farmer’s market, restaurants, stores, etc.)

  • Carry hand sanitizer with you and sanitize hands after exiting any store/business and before re-entering your vehicle

  • If you decide to use gloves, sanitize hands before putting on gloves and after removing them. Wear gloves upon entering business and remove and dispose of them immediately after exiting place of business.

  • Sanitize door handles and most touched areas of the car often.

If residents do not adhere to these safety protocols, they will need to quarantine upon returning.

Regular Testing for Long-term Residents

  • Long term residents will get a COVID-19 test at least once every month.

  • All people will quarantine while awaiting test results except long term residents waiting for routine monthly test results.

  • All people will get tested after potential exposure, i.e., when these safety protocols were not followed.

  • You can schedule a COVID 19 test through the San Bernardino County Health Department’s website.

  • There is a testing site located about 12 miles from Dhamma Dena and test results are usually available 24 hours after a test.
