Temporary Summer Caretaker

POSITION AVAILABLE: TEMPORARY SUMMER CARETAKER (5 weeks)


Dhamma Dena is a Vipassana Buddhist Meditation Center situated in the Mojave Desert of California, near Palm Springs and Joshua Tree National Park.


We are dedicated to supporting and awakening our capacity to love unconditionally and wisely. Through silent retreats, work retreats, self-retreats or as staff we orient towards building the strength to live our lives free of the clouds of anxiety, fear, obsessions, depression and confusion and are currently in the process of shifting to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) leadership and programing.

Dhamma Dena is committed to building accessibility by supporting all those who want to come to the center, those who are BIPOC, transgender, gay, lesbian, queer, gender non-conforming, those who have immigrated, those who live with physical disability, those with chemical sensitivity, and those without financial resources. RESPONSIBILITIES

This is a ~5 week temporary contract position (June 29 to August 5th) and is a hands-on job. The candidate would live at Dhamma Dena full-time; room and board are part of the compensation package.

The Resident Caretaker/Facilities Staff are stewards of the physical aspects of Dhamma Dena.


  • Water plants around the center (weekly or bi weekly)

  • Manage rat control on the land. Setting and monitoring the traps, escorting rats to another location). In keeping with the Precept to not harm beings, we do not use rat poisons or traditional rat traps.

  • Identifying and completing basic repairs and maintenance to buildings, plumbing, etc.

  • Coordination and supervision of work with electricians and plumbers when needed

  • Coordinate repairs of the organization’s van if needed.

  • Other responsibilities, based on individual skills, may include: painting, carpentry, irrigation, land management, managing volunteers/work retreatants.

  • Prepare beds and rooms for work and self retreatants

  • Cleaning, laundry and housekeeping

  • Grocery shopping and mail pick up at the post office

  • Perform other duties as assigned

SKILLS AND ABILITIES


  • Strong interest in service and community living

  • Takes initiative to do and complete what needs to be done before being asked to do it

  • Strong skills in problem solving (including ability to find answers and solutions using online research and other resources)

  • Ability to follow directions and complete tasks/projects on time and to specifications.

  • Experience and skills in housekeeping, repairs, permaculture, landscaping, gardening, carpentry, plumbing or electrical a plus

  • Open and pleasant attitude, flexibility, dependability, honesty and integrity.

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Can work alone without direct supervision

QUALIFICATIONS


  • Interested in being part of a lively Buddhist residential community at Dhamma Dena

  • Valid California driver’s license and working vehicle.

  • A commitment to a non-harming lifestyle including refraining from alcohol and recreational drugs while at the center.

  • Experience working well with and within multicultural groups

  • Proficiency with Apple IS, basic computer programs and communication platforms.

  • Prior experience on retreat at Dhamma Dena a plus


Physical qualifications for this position include the ability to:

  • Work outdoors including frequent exposure to seasonal weather conditions.

  • Lift, carry, push or pull objects up to 30 pounds.

  • Perform moderately difficult manipulative tasks.

  • Communicate clearly on a telephone, Slack, Google gmail, and text.

  • This position will be exposed to chemical substances that are typical for maintenance, janitorial and landscaping work.

  • Must be able to speak and write in English

  • Specific vision abilities required are close vision, middle distance vision and color vision


This is an on-site residential staff position. The following qualifications pertain to the position’s residential nature:


  • A strong interest in service and community living;

  • The ability to live harmoniously and mindfully in shared housing;

  • Experience living in an intentional community

  • Use and ease in using compassionate and open communication systems (i.e., Nonviolent Communication.)

  • Ease with living within a multicultural community

  • Feels competent in the face of conflict (how to handle, address, lower, and resolve when available.)

  • Is self-reliant

  • Interest in mindfulness, meditation and the dharma are a plus.


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS


This is a 15 hour a week position that requires a flexible schedule. The pay is $15 per hour with room and board provided.
